A prestigious Mayfair townhouse with parquet flooring throughout reception rooms – original Victorian parquet blocks in chevron pattern. The floor had been sealed with brittle, yellowed lacquer flaking in high-traffic areas. Blocks showed wear, scuff marks, and small areas of damage. Client required complete restoration to highest standard.
Parquet restoration demands more care than ordinary floorboard sanding. Blocks must be sanded in sequence following pattern to avoid visual irregularities. We removed old lacquer carefully, sanded through multiple grits following chevron pattern. Damaged or split blocks were replaced individually, colour-matched to originals. Finally, all blocks were sealed with premium matte lacquer enhancing wood colour without yellowing.
The parquet now displays true character – varying wood grain and natural colour variations giving authenticity. Replaced blocks blend seamlessly, new lacquer is hard-wearing and invisible. High-heeled shoes and furniture will mark floor over time, but this is part of its charm – showing authenticity and character.
Original materials are irreplaceable. Parquet flooring down for 150+ years is perfectly seasoned and stable – no reason to replace. Restoration reveals original beauty and maintains property's heritage value. Period property buyers specifically want to see original features.
Yes, if done carefully. We source reclaimed parquet matching age and tone of original floor, fitting them following original pattern. New blocks are finished identically. Over time, as entire floor develops patina from wear and light exposure, replaced blocks become indistinguishable.
Gloss shows footprints and dust, requiring frequent cleaning. Matte hides marks better and gives sophisticated appearance. For period properties, matte is almost always right choice – emphasises wood grain and avoids plastic appearance.
